Self-Reflection: Definition and How to Do It Right

self-reflection

Self-Reflection is a self-care practice that involves being in a quiet space to go deep within and to think about everything that has to do with oneself. The point of self-reflection is to examine your thoughts, feelings, and actions for further understanding.

It is as if you are playing a movie about your life in the past, present, or future. While watching this movie you are a keen observer, as your main role is similar to that of a data analysis.

You are trying to collect as much information as you can to be able to figure out one of life’s greatest mysteries. ‘’The Self’’.

Self-Reflection is the key to unlocking unlimited possibilities in your life. Unfortunately, such a concept is also hard for many.

Going deep within requires you to have courage and patience. As there are aspects within us that many run from due to the fear of confrontation with that side of us that we wish never existed.

Truth is the only way to Freedom; Freedom is what leads the way to Happiness.

In life, we can lie to others all we want, but we can never lie to ourselves.

If you don’t know yourself, you don’t know your nature. If you don’t know your nature, you don’t know where to exist. By knowing your nature, knowing yourself, you know what to be and how to live. And that only comes from knowledge of self, knowing yourself.

How to self-reflect

self-reflection

The practice of self-reflection is very similar to meditation. It can be a very simple exercise if you make it so.

  1. Pick a comfortable environment
  2. Turn off all distractions and outside noises
  3. Journal your thoughts. This step is not required but can help bring you more clarity as the emotions get deeper. You can also use past entries to help measure changes of progression or regression.
  4. Examine your findings. As a keen observer, how do you understand everything? What are the problems? What are the solutions? How does all of this make sense to you?

How often should you do self-reflection exercises?

This will all depend on your time and lifestyle. Although, I would suggest no less than once a week. Of course, with practices like this, the more you do it the more growth and improvement you will see within yourself.

We live in a busy world all with busy lifestyles. It is of utmost importance that we try our best to incorporate routines of self-care and self-love to maintain our mental health and wellbeing.
